Roger Preston, DMD
Roger Ames Preston, 85, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Ruth Ann (Azinger) Preston, died Monday, August 7, 2017, after a short illness. His family was by his side. He was born on April 29, 1932 in Manchester, CT, son of the late Harold L. Preston and Carrie (Vanderbilt) Preston and had lived in Simsbury for the past 56 years.
Roger was a graduate of American International College in 1954. He then entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed in England for three years, serving in the Dental Corps. Upon discharge, he entered Tufts University Dental School in Boston, MA, from which he graduated with his D.M.D. degree in 1961. He maintained a dental practice in Simsbury for 35 years.
He was a member of Simsbury United Methodist Church, Simsbury Land Trust, and the Hartford Audubon Society. He was an Eagle Scout and involved in Scouting for over 45 years. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 94 in Simsbury in the 70's and 80's. He was named a Simsbury Hometown Hero in 1992. After retirement in 1996, he worked many hours for the Simsbury Public Library's Annual Book Sale. He was a proud blood donor, having given 26 gallons over the years. His passions were birding, and three-mile daily walks on Iron Horse Boulevard. He also enjoyed hiking, leading bird walks, volunteering, reading, gardening, and traveling with Ruth Ann.
Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his son, Dale Andrew Preston and his wife Nancy of North Kingstown, RI, and their children Zachary and his wife Erin of Exeter, RI, and Taylor Elizabeth of North Kingstown, RI; his daughter, Carol Preston Bailey and her husband Daniel and their children Rebecca Potter and Jacob Bailey of Guilford, VT; his son Gary Alan Preston and his wife Michelle of Simsbury. He was predeceased by two sisters, Beatrice P. Harrison and Alice P. Estelle; and a brother-in-law, Howard Harrison.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15th at the Simsbury United Methodist Church, 799 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury.
